The wild ride unfolded at around 9:30 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 18, when a sergeant with the department spotted a grey Lexus speeding northbound on I-95 near the American Legion overpass at over 90 mph.
When he activated his emergency lights, the teen reportedly floored it, pushing the car past 120 mph in a desperate bid to escape, according to officials.
The chase lasted about a mile and a half before traffic brought the Lexus to a screeching halt.
The driver’s alleged reckless behavior ended abruptly as the car came to a stop, officials quipped, “like a Detroit Lion playoff run," a spokesperson for the sheriff's office mused after the Commanders' unexpected win to go to the NFC Championship.
When law enforcement approached the vehicle, the 17-year-old was found to have the odor of alcohol on his breath, investigators said.
A deputy also responded to the scene and assisted in taking the teen into custody.
The driver was slapped with a slew of charges, including:
- Felony eluding;
- Driving under the influence;
- Underage alcohol consumption;
- Violating a juvenile license restriction.
He was detained at the Juvenile Detention Center.
Two passengers in the car were released to a sober adult, police added.
